From the Master’s Desk, An October greeting
to my Masonic family with a prayer that strength and joy be ours.
This is the most important piece I have written for our
newsletter and I strongly encourage all of us to see that another reads
it. I have returned to
the topic for the last few months of presenting and preparing ourselves
to better engage our neighbors and friends as Masons.
Our neighbors have shown us that our lodge is semi-invisible.
To put a sharper point on it,
stand on the sidewalk next to our lodge one time and ask the first
person walking past where the Masonic Hall is; odds are very good you
will be answered with the question,,," a what?"
Presented here is a letter
intended for dispersal to our Shakopee and surrounding area neighbors to
start a dialogue. It is our own media

introduce myself. I am your
neighbor and also a Freemason; I belong to the world's oldest and largest
fraternity. Our Masonic Lodge
has been on If you watched the History
or Discovery channels, you may have seen at least one of several shows
this past year about Freemasons, most were good, not fanciful.
Chances are good, you may not know what a Freemason is, and yet have
a friend or relative who is one.
It has been tradition to go quietly about our business of service to others
since the days of small towns, when our communities knew us as Masons
through our pancake breakfasts and other activities.
Since our towns grew into a big metropolis we became invisible
through our tradition of quiet service. The men of The fraternity is
selective. It requires that a
candidate be of good moral character, with a sincere belief in a Supreme
Being, loyal to our country, and dedicated to his family.
We reflect our values in our behavior.
Our tenets are: Religious Tolerance, Political Freedom and Personal
Integrity. We unite through community
service. A Freemason or Mason
(the terms are interchangeable) is a man who professes a faith in God.
As a man of faith, he uses the tools of moral and ethical truths to
serve mankind. Freemasonry is
not a religion, though we acknowledge deity and we pray before and after our
meetings. We are prohibited from
discussing both religion and politics in our lodges. We do not discuss either
of these subjects because they are subjects that divide men and fail to
promote unity. In fellowship
with his fellow members, a Mason finds ways to serve his God, his family,
his neighbor and his country. He
recognizes his responsibility for justice, truth, charity, enlightenment,
freedom, liberty, honesty and integrity in all endeavors.
A Mason binds himself to like-minded men in a brotherhood that
transcends all religious, ethnic, social, cultural and educational
differences. A well run Masonic lodge
will have these components at each meeting; social, educational, spiritual
and ritual. The last deserves a
comment. Ritual unites each
Mason to every preceding Mason through the past 300 plus years, including
Paul Revere, Ben Franklin and presidents, George Washington, Woodrow Wilson,
Franklin D. Roosevelt and Gerald Ford.
There are 14 Masons who were president of the Each lodge strives to
directly serve its community.
Our lodge, Minn. River Valley Lodge # 6, annually gives $5000.00 in
scholarships to students in selected areas.
Beginning this year, we will sponsor a new Archery Program through
the Dept. of Natural Resources at the On a larger scale
Freemasons of Minnesota financially support, the Shriner's Hospital for
Children, the Minnesota Cancer Research Center and Masonic Cancer Center at
the Univ. of Minn., speech and language clinics for children called the Rite
Care Clinic of Elk River and the Scottish Rite Language Clinic in Duluth,
and two Masonic Homes for the elderly, the Minnesota Masonic Care Center in
Bloomington and the Minn. Masonic Home North Ridge in New Hope. If you would like to get

Lodge brothers: Not
knowing if this will result in a small or a large reaction we should prepare
for the best. We can respond to
individuals with a simple e-mail, or phone call and if appropriate follow up
with a short visit. If well
received we might hold an open house or plan a unique or particular format
of welcome. All of our family
can participate. I ask for a
Masonically well versed brother to volunteer to assist us with publicity and
questions. See me, if this
outreach program is for you and volunteer. I know the beginning,,,,
You know the end. You possess excellent ideas for further outreach,,, with a
little thought you can call the ideas up.
THE MASTER SUMS UP! On this same theme I want
to compliment the Shrine. The
Zurah and Osman Shrine highlighted Masonry to the public this year.
On Oct 7, my wife Jeni and I + 3 of our kids took in the circus and
as I watched, like it was my first circus she says "The Square and Compass
are on the floor." There were fully, 6 Square and Compass, 2 - in each
circus ring. She saw them before
I. I reacted with "WOW, what a
terrific display," everyone knows the Shriners, and the Shriners were
displaying the Craft as they displayed their own connection to Masonry.
I thought, at least an observant few will see a connection. Then, I
bought the Circus Program.
Inside, to my great pleasure was an outstanding introduction to Freemasonry
and its appendant bodies, Scottish Rite, York Rite, the Order of the Eastern
Star, Jobs Daughters and De Molay with an invitation. A change in philosophy is
occurring. Masonry is beginning
to say "Hello, I am here if you would like to talk."
When individual Masons all over adopt that same initiative, our
Ancient Craft will turn around.
It will not fail; it cannot, for it offers its adherents too much. I also
had the pleasure to meet brothers at a Kid's ID event at the Duluth Zoo
during it's Children's Halloween (costume party) on Oct 2nd.
Lodges in In one year: It would be very interesting if brothers would as suggested volunteer to stand outside our lodge and ask a passerby, where the Masonic Lodge is and report on his answer. Volunteer at our next steering committee.

Tools in Action: A father wishing to quit
smoking wrote his goal on a 3 x 5 foot sheet of paper and had his two kids
hold it between them as he snapped a few pictures with his digital camera.
He then taped the picture to the front of his pack of cigarettes. Connecting his goal with
the love of his children gave him what he needed to stick to his goal day

Grace Happens
At times I find myself homesick. It is kind of a non-specific
homesickness. It’s like I want to go back to the home of my childhood (which
I barely remember). What I do remember is my folks, warmth, love, dreams,
laughter, safety -- a metaphorical “safe harbor”, located somewhere in the
past, a lost time when things seemed simpler. But, as Thomas Wolfe said,
“You can’t go home again”. We
can never go back home to our family, back home to our childhood, back home
to our dreams of glory and of fame. Why? Because everything we knew then,
has changed and life goes on. While we weren’t looking, we got older, and
both the past and the memories of our past, changed. And what we are left
with are just
echoes of sweet and relentless longing.
Such longing may carry
within it a yearning for home, but it is for a home faraway in time rather
than space. It represents an emptiness that needs to be satisfied. It may
represent a relationship that has been lost or never obtained. We cannot
create a relationship or fill the emptiness with dreams of a past that may
or may not have been real. The past is fixed. However, the future is wide
open and shines with hope and opportunity. It will take thoughtful future
actions to satisfy the need for a worthy relationship and to fill the
emptiness. For me, it is a yearning
for wholeness, for redemption, for Grace, for a deeper relationship with my
God -- for a future home, one with many rooms and peopled with all of my
loved ones. This is the source of fulfillment for me.
And how does Grace fit into all of this? Grace is
undeserved gifts –gifts from our God. More broadly, divine Grace refers to
God's gifts to humankind, including
life,
creation, and
salvation. Grace will satisfy our
yearnings and fill our emptiness. Grace will give us reconciliation with our
God and salvation. The
New Testament word that is usually
translated "grace" is in
Greek, “charis”, which literally translates to “gift”. Grace
is often distinguished from mercy in that mercy is seen as not receiving
punishment that one deserves to receive, whereas grace is receiving a
positive benefit that one does not deserve to receive.
In other words, Grace happens.
Although there is no
Christian notion of salvation through grace in Judaism, The grace of God is
found throughout the Old Testament and relates to forgiveness and atonement.
The Hebrew language used different words for the term we call grace. Several
examples of the grace of God can be found in the Old Testament in such
places as Deuteronomy 7:9; Nehemiah 1:5; 9:32; Daniel 9:4 and II Chronicles
6:14 just to name a few. The concept is rooted in the Hebrew word “hesed”
which is often translated grace, mercy, or loving-kindness. God's grace is
used in the Old Testament text in three ways: first, in creation; second, in
His covenants; and third, in forgiveness as God extended mercy and grace to
all who repented.
The song, Amazing Grace,
contains some of the most meaningful lyrics relating to Grace, that I can
think of:
Amazing grace, How sweet the sound
Amazing love, amazing grace. And it is a gift to all of us if we
just believe. As promised to us in
Psalm 84:11 “For
the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD gives grace and glory; No good
thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly”. And what is grace,
but the means by which we can satisfy our longing and our loneliness. It is
the gift from our Lord that keeps on giving. It is heaven begun below, in
the knowledge of the Grace that our Lord rains down on us. As we are
admonished by the plumb, let it be our care to walk uprightly, and trust God
to give us every thing that is good for us. That man is blessed, whatever
his outward circumstances may be, who trusts in the Lord of hosts.
Grace happens when we aren’t
looking – whether we deserve it or not.

obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

November LEO Program Last month we met at the
Masonic Home in The September question
was: Why are Candidates Hoodwinked? Blindfolding a candidate
is symbolical of that state in which he has "long been in darkness and now
prays for light." It is not to
keep him from seeing the lodge room, or the officers, or the Brethren, but
to make a deep and lasting impression on his mind, that Masonically, he has
no, or but partial light, and that only by the consummation of the
ceremonies for which he has asked and which the lodge has granted, may he
receive that Masonic light which will enable him to "travel in foreign
countries and receive Master's wages."
That the conclusion of parts of Masonic degrees be accompanied by
unexpected sight and sound is a very old and very effective way of making an
event memorable. The question for October

The View from the I received an email awhile
back (author unknown) that was quite interesting and inspiring.
And yes, as you would guess, if you have been reading my previous
articles, I found in it a Masonic theme!
In the Masonic Manual (and part of the Stair Case lecture of the 2nd
degree) we are taught: “GEOMETRY, the first and
noblest of sciences, is the basis on which the superstructure of Masonry is
erected. By geometry, we may curiously trace nature, through her various
windings, to her most concealed recesses.
By it, we discover the power, the wisdom, and the goodness of the
Grand Artificer of the Universe, and view with delight the proportions which
connect this vast machine…” Here is the body of the
email. I hope you find it as
fascinating and enjoyable as I did.
